This tool is too handy, versatile, space-saving and affordable. It's a bit of a pain to get clamped on(and more so for some veh's than others of course). You could go rent one of the ones with multiple fittings and hope they're all there and that they refund your deposit promptly. You'll get a better/more accurate torque-down and save time on the repair itself but spend time/gas/hassle. The parts store kits are not going to help you get a smooth/bald one off though. Absolutely indispensable tool for removing/installing inner tie rods! I recently used this to remove/install inner tie rods on a 2006 Ford Escape and a 2006 Nissan Sentra. Neither of the OEM factory installed ones had any flat surfaces to use the other style of Tie Rod Tool that your local auto parts store rents/loans. Luckily I did my research before diving in and was prepared.Only some of the aftermarket replacements will offer the flat surfaces for installation.Be sure the surface of tie rod where the tool will be used is free of any grease and grime and is dry. If not, the tool may slip. Happened to me on the first tie rod. I used non-chlorinated brake cleaner on a rag to wipe down the surfaces to remove grease and grime. Must for inner tie rods with no flatsGood, basic, tool. Works as designed. Quite a few cars (e.g. 2000 Dodge Caravan) have inner tie rods with no flats. The regular sets do not work. In my case the local parts shops did not have this tool. I had the truck on blocks until it came in the mail. Removal of the tie rod, once this thing was on and tight, was easy. If you do not have a rack block, retract the rack by turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction to give it maximum support. Then use a long extension and a breaker bar on the socket drive.

I was baffled after removing tie rod boot on my ford contour to see a a perfectly round inner tie rod connection. After a few Google searches, i found everything from people saying sub-frame removal, "what" to change a tie rod? then onto chain wrenches and all methods to skin this cat. When I got my new inner tie rods in the mail, I realized the large tool would not fit, as the tie rods were completely round - they had no wrench flats. Then I began to wonder if the stock inner tie rods would have flats, so I ordered this tool.It does what it looks like it will do - you tighten it onto the round socket portion of the inner tie rod (I found that tightening one side by hand, then tightening the other side with a wrench worked well, since there wasn't quite room to tighten both sides with a wrench). Excellent alternative to a more expensive tie rod tools. The tool can be solidly clamp to the tie rod end. The teeth do mark the part but provide slip proof grip and is less likely to round even a hex if clamped tightly. This tool does require some clearance around the tie rod end. Tool is small and takes little room in a tool box and can be used other purposed besides tie rod ends; for example, gripping larger rounded nuts and bolts or stubborn round pipe, etc. For professional mechanics this may not be the tool of choice for tie rod ends but an excellent tool to occasional use.
