The Audioengine P4 is well built and has the potential to be an excellent desktop speaker. However, it has a very high frequency response spike at 125 Hz that cannot be compensated with simple equalization. Parametric equalization with a digital signal processor is required to flatten the response. Without equalization or a subwoofer I would rate the P4 a 3. With equalization and a subwoofer it performs as a 5 for its size. My configuration uses the P4s with a Audioengine S8 subwoofer that are equalized using REW calibration software and a MiniDSP Flex audio processor/preamp and amplified by a Schiit Gjallarhorn F 15W speaker amp. These continue to be a really great near field monitor for me. Very smooth, musical, and non-fatiguing top end. Feels like a fairly flat response with a tad of high end roll off. I've paired with small 8" sub for computer play back and it is fun to just enjoy listening for the sake of listening. Dumb? Maybe. Enjoyable? Yes!I've always loved a good silk dome tweeter. They can be crisp and musical without rasp or fatigue from aluminum domes. I love both types but I could probably listen to these P4s all day. They are so articulate without being tiring. I listened to Super Tramp, Pink Floyd, and Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies (dating myself) and I felt reenergized to listen to these familiar tunes. A $325 pair of speakers (I have the bamboo) have no business sounding this good. I am pretty particular about sound quality but needed a very small pair of bookshelf speakers to fit a particular space. The P4s were the right size and had good reviews so I decided to go ahead and purchase without hearing them first. I'm glad I did. I was very surprised at how good they sound. I have them hooked up to a Denon receiver and Schiit Mani phono stage, and my main source of music is a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC turntable with acrylic platter and Ortofon Blue cartridge. I listen mostly to classical and jazz music. The speakers really pull you into the music. They simply disappear and let you enjoy. I bought these speakers to replace a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers that I own. Nothing really wrong with the JBL's, just old and I wanted to update. Bought the P4's ( Bamboo finish ) Set everything up and let them break in a bit.Just some notes.They do sound pretty good, but for the price, there are much better options for sound quality.Zero Bass, and you NEED a sub for these to even out.You won't be blown away by the sound, but they do look very nice, and have a very nice finish and solid build. Before buying these speakers I wasn't sure what I was getting. Audioengine made some lofty claims about their build quality and after trying out the A5 active speakers I was a bit dubious. They really did win me over though, and here's why:Sound: By far the most important thing when you're dropping $250 for a set of speakers. If you want studio-monitor neutrality, these aren't for you.
